The historical society uses the photo-sharing network, Flickr, to house all of our pictures. We use Flickr for the simple reason that it makes finding and commenting on photos simple and easy. Please browse our gallery sets and if you see a picture that you would like to comment on, please do so. While we are looking for any historical background information on any of these pictures, any comment you would like to leave is certainly welcome.

Meetings & Events
The Beaverton Historical Society (BHS) was founded in 2008. It is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization with board members but no paid staff. Until we find a permanent location for the museum and offices, we will meet monthly at the Beaverton Library's main conference room just off the lobby. Our Executive Session begins at 3:30pm where board business is discussed. The General Session is open format and welcome to everyone who is interested in our beloved city's past, present and future.

Upcoming meeting dates:

  • October 13th (Tues), 4pm
  • November 10th (Tues), 4pm
  • December 8th (Tues), 4pm

The first half hour of each meeting will primarily cover board business. While it is open to the public, feel free to show up 30 minutes later for the open segment. Here we will share stories and artifacts, welcome special guests and discuss ongoing and future projects.

We are always looking for like-minded volunteers and board members to help with the organization and future direction of the society. If you have an interest in Beaverton history and would like to be a part of our leadership team, please contact us above.

Mission

As the historian for the city of Beaverton, the Beaverton Historical Society exists to preserve, educate and celebrate our wonderful past.

Vision

The Beaverton Historical Society's vision is to promote city pride through the education of our historical past. We will earn our community's respect and enthusiasm through our commitment to the city's residents both young and old; through our partnerships with the city, local businesses and schools; and through community projects that celebrates our historic past and promotes city pride.

Goals

  • To collect and preserve photographs, artifacts and documents that relate to the city,
  • To interpret and present city history through exhibits, educational programs, publications and special events,
  • To make our history accessible to the community first through extensive use of online tools and later through the resources available from the establishment of a city history museum
  • To foster community pride in our city through a variety of educational and beautification projects related to our historic past.

Projects

Beaverton History Day (completed Feb 9, 2009)
In order to recognize and celebrate the contributions made to our city by those who have come before us, Mayor Denny Doyle proclaimed February 10th of each year to be known as Beaverton History Day. The significance of this day is not lost for it was on this date in 1893 that Beaverton became a city. We at the Beaverton Historical Society hope that the formal establishment of this day will be used as a springboard for ourselves, the city, the school district and other community businesses and organizations to remember our past through educational and festive activities.

Photo and Artifact Preservation (ongoing)Cady Bldg 2008
The BHS is always looking for historic pictures and items to document and preserve. If you have old pictures of your family or the area, don't let them sit in a box in the attic, let us preserve them for you. All pictures or items donated to us will stay in your name and you will always have access to them. If you have pictures and don't want to part with the originals, that's okay. Let us scan them so we can add them to our database as a way of preserving the original.

Beaverton Memoirs (ongoing)
"Our Memories of Beaverton Past" started out as a senior memoirs project but is now open to everyone who would like to share their memories growing up in Beaverton. This is our attempt to capture the look and feel of Beaverton through the eyes of those who lived here during a time when our city was much smaller and less complicated. If you like to participate or know of someone who would like to do his or her memoirs, please contact us above or download the questionnaire here: Beaverton Memoirs.pdf

Historical Business RegistryCady Bldg 1914
If you have a business that has been continuously operating in the Beaverton area for 25 years or more, then you qualify for being listed in our Historical Business Registry. A Historical Profile will be created for you and listed on our website. You will also receive a plaque.

Historic Markers
For historic buildings and locations throughout the city, we would like to put up informational plaques outside these locations describing their historical significance. For example, outside Cedar Hills Crossing, there would be a plaque describing the airport that used to be at this location.

Park Statue
There are many founding figures of our fair city who could be immortalized in bronze to grace our city park across from the library. From Augustus Fanno to Lawrence Hall to Alonzo Cady, our first mayor, to name a few. We at the historical society believe that a park statue of an influencial  figure would go far in helping us build our city identity and celebrate our past.

Historic Profiles (ongoing)
The BHS plans to create profiles of historic people, places and events all in a consitent format that will be made available online as well as in print. Online they would be catagorized and searchable while in print form, they could be included in teaching packets or other educational formats.

Historic Walking Maps and Tours
The city has held these events before and we would like to revive and improve upon them. We would make these maps available in print and on our website and in the summer months, lead guided tours. Tours would be of our historic downtown district as well as of the Crescent Grove Cemetery.

Additional projects being considered include:

  • Establishment of a city recognized Beaverton History Day
  • Beaverton History Educational Media
  • Beaverton History Teaching Packets
  • History Display in City Library's Local History Room
  • Beaverton Parade Float
  • Traveling History Exhibit
  • City Year Book
  • Beaverton History Books
  • Beaverton Museum
  • Preservation of Historic sites
