Nodd's Review The year is 1964. Were you born yet? I wasn't. That's a pretty long time ago for most and I can't even imagine what Beaverton must have looked like back then. But if we were around and driving down Canyon Rd, I know of one thing I'd recognize and that's the blue building of the Beaverton Napa Auto Parts store right at Lombard Ave. Yes, this Beaverton landmark has been around and so has it's owner, Harold Freece who even now, in his 80s, can still be seen working the aisles with his two sons, Wendell and Warren, close at hand. But while Wendell has now taken over day-to-day operations of the store, now the largest Napa auto parts dealer in the greater Portland area with over 1 million dollars in inventory, Warren has moved right next door and owns Active Water Sports.
So how does a local Beaverton family-owned business stay on top of the competition for so long? "Nothing is more important than being courteous, friendly, helpful, and prompt in the attention you give to customers," reads their employee handbook. "Customer's are among our most valuable assets." Yes, they teach their employees well. In fact, long before I met Wendell, I had dropped by the store during a very stormy afternoon last winter because I could not see a thing... my windshield wipers were shot. And when I told a sales person just that, not only did he pick out the right wipers, but he told me to stay dry inside while he fitted them on my car. I shook the drenched sales persons hand when he came back in and thought, ‘wow, what a great store, I think I'll tell my friends.' Well, now that I'm doing Nodds, I can tell you, all my Beaverton friends about my great experience there. And after getting to know Wendell and talking at length to Frankie Mercado, the General Manager, I'm even more assured of my recommendation to you.
