AAA Review Beaverton Farmer's Market From May-June 2008 Issue of 'Via, AAA Traveler's Companion' Magazine
Berries star at the Portland area's biggest farmers' market:
- firm hood strawberries in June;
- blueberries in July;
- raspberries, blackberries, and olallieberries in August and September.
Grab a small basket for instant gratification, or buy a whole case to freeze for the berry-deprived months ahead. Mount Hood region orchards yield the expected bounty of apples and pears, but the area's meat vendors offer real surprises. Choices include:
- grass fed elk,
- water buffalo
- yak.
For another local specialty, try a bag of fresh-roasted hazelnuts. With as many as 20,000 shoppers on a sunny Saturday, this market hops.
Background
The Beaverton Farmer's Market began in June of 1988 with 12 vendors. Today, our Saturday Market draws 15,000 visitors daily and features over 100 vendors who provide them with the best in locally produced plants, artisan foods, fruits, flowers, vegetables, meat, fish and dairy products. It is our great pleasure to bring the finest growers and producers of artisan foods to our community. Shopping at the Market Means...
- Enjoying whole foods that are at their peak of flavor
- Enjoying foods that have not been shipped across the country burning precious fossil fuels
- Buying plants that were raised and nurtured by the people who sell them
- Supporting artisans who produce products that are made with attention to craft and quality
- Boosting our local economy by supporting northwest producers
PRODUCT AVAILABILITY
Nobody is more at the mercy of the whim of Mother Nature than our growers. Sometimes crops come early, sometimes they come late, and occasionally, they don't come at all. Below is a link to a chart that you can use as a general guideline to fruit and vegetable availability at the Beaverton Farmers Market. For more specific information contact our producers directly by clicking on the Growers link at the bottom of this page, then search by farm name or product type to obtain contact information. You may also contact the Market directly (information provided above) and we will help you obtain the information you need.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Pet Policy We love our furry four legged friends, but not at the Market. Our aisles are crowded with customers concentrating on the many products filling our vendors' stalls. Dogs and their leashes are easily tripped over which can result in injury to both the human and the animal. We ask that you not bring your dogs to the Market (unless you can put them in your purse whichsome of you do). We also ask that you do not bring your pet and leave him or her in your car. It is easy to under estimate how hot your car will get creating a potentially unsafe situation for your pet.
Lost & Found If you think that you have lost any personal items while at the Market you may check with our lost and found at the MarketInformation Booth. After Market hours you can contact us at 503-643-5345 or e-mail us at market@beavertonfarmersmarket.com for lost and found information. The office is closed on Sunday and Monday.
Market Gift Certificates Market tokens, in $5.00 denominations, make great gifts for family, friends or business. Tokens may be purchased at the Market Information Booth where they come in a little box with a raffia ribbon.
