Driving down Baseline Rd around 170th Ave, you might easily pass by Bassitt Auto without a second glance. Looking like a typical auto service place from the outside, it's understandable albeit unfortunate because Bassitt Auto is anything but typical.
I'll begin my story where all of Bassitt Auto's loyal customers begin theirs: an entrance into an authentic recreation of a 50's style diner, complete with soda fountain, jukebox, memorabilia and dining booths. Hamburger and Chocolate malt anyone? Unfortunately no, but they do give out complimentary sodas from their fountain as well as espresso or coffee.
What's with the movie set like decor? "The 1950's was a time of prosperity, great classic cars and a much more family oriented than today," owner and Portland native Craig Bassitt told me. "So creating this wonderful environment for my customers is a way to bring back those fond memories." But the 50's theme doesn't end with the waiting room. There is a kind of car ‘waiting room' too that resembles a 50's gas station with antique gas pumps and museum quality gas station items. And to top it all off, they host an annual ‘Cruise In' where they invite classic car and hot rod owners from all over the state to gather for an evening of ‘food, friends and fun'.
So after the shock of entering this time portal wore off, I noticed something else that made a big impression and that was the cleanliness of the waiting room. Later I would find out that cleanliness and organization is just part of the Bassitt Auto work environment and this includes the garage... the cleanest garage I've ever seen!
Yes, as you may have guessed, Mr. Bassitt is a bit eccentric and committed to the 'good ol' days' making him not at all like your typical local business owner. But this means he also treats his customers and staff with as much good old fashion loyalty as they treat him. In fact, Since 1972, he's been treating his staff like family and give them generous amounts of say on how the business operated and this inevitably leads to high moral, pride and the feeling of ownership in their work. Is it any wonder that he has staff who have been with him for almost 20 years? These people invest their lives with Bassitt Auto and in return, Mr. Bassit invests in them. "Most places try to make sure they have at least one master technician but here at Bassitt Auto, we train our staff so that each and every technician holds an L1 Master-Tech ASE Certification... that's the kind of quality and expertise our customers can expect".
Okay, so the experience and knowledge is there but how about customer service, Mr. Bassitt? "You won't find many places giving out 24 month guarantees on all work performed but that's what you get with Bassitt. Not only that, but I will also add my personal guarantee that if you are not satisfied in any way, you can bring your car back and we'll make it right." Wow, you can't ask for much more than that!
