Nodd's Review Outside, the sign reads The Great Frame Up. Okay, looks interesting enough for a peek so I walk through the door. First impression = Wow, this place is incredible! It's not a very big store compared to the national chains but I can tell you first hand that what it lacks for in size, it makes up for in content, quality and elegance. With what could easily be a 15-foot high ceiling, two of the three walls are covered in wonderful works of art befit a gallery or even museum. In fact, as I was later to find out, there are indeed museum quality pieces on display and framed by the owner, Kevin Moe: an illuminated manuscript from the Koran dated back to the 1600's and a velum document written in old French from Louis the XIII's government dated 1625 to name just a couple. Both are delicately housed in period frames that enhance the uniqueness of each of the pieces. Curious about the quality of workmanship or artistic talent of The Great Frame Up... just a few minutes admiring both of these beauties will certainly put any doubts to rest!
Introducing Kevin Moe, the owner of this fabulous store. He was kind enough to give me a tour and explain to me, an artistic novice, the ‘ins and outs' of framing. First of all, "a frame can make or break the art piece," he told me as we viewed the various pictures on the high wall. "The frame highlights the content of the artwork and the perfect frame is one that is noticed secondary to the art piece itself".
The third wall is covered entirely in frames. I saw thick fancy wood frames, simple thin shiny frames and everything in between. But the one thing I learned that stood out the most is when Kevin told me that "framing is not just for pictures... artwork does not need to be flat." And to make the point, he showed me a golf picture with a real golf ball included in a frame for one and then the current project he's working on which is framing for display a small child's garment that looked to be a hundred years old (a customer's family heirloom to be sure).
Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw at The Great Frame Up and now understand why many consider this store to be the premier framing shop in the entire greater Portland area. "We are not the cheapest place in town however," Kevin was quick to mention, "but there are reasons why we have repeat customers from all over the city." As he continued, I found out that not only do they have the largest selection of frames on the west side, but they also carry over 130 frames that no other frame store in Portland carry. "This variety of stock is of great value to our customers and adds to the uniqueness of our offering." They also use a cutting edge visualization software to help customers preview their art piece as well as use a patented magnetic board for displaying art as it would look hanging on a wall (as opposed to the customary counter top that other frame stores use).
So if you're on a budget and just want to frame a photo of your dog for your office desk then sure, go to Target or a national chain and get a great deal.
