Nodds Review

Everybody knows that Beaverton is a booming city with companies from all over making our fair city their home. So when a new one comes to town, I'm happy to be among the first to welcome them to the neighborhood.

So here's a big "Welcome to Beaverton" shout out to the Portland chapter of the national Assistance League®!

Located on 117th Ave across from PetCo, but before TJ Maxx and next to the Canyon Square mall, you'll find the new Headquarters for the Portland chapter of Assistance League in a building that also houses their Thrift and Consignment stores (enter the front door and turn left for Thrift and right for Consignment). I've been both left and right and can tell you that there's pretty much something for everyone. From clothes to household items, furniture and even fine jewelry, both stores are worth dropping by to browse for gifts and, of course, some great bargains.

Cleaning out the spare room? Have some extra items around the house? Well, that's what the thrift shop is for and they will be happy to take your donations, but don't forget about the consignment shop for some of your nicer items. They'll split the proceeds with you!

So what is the Assistance League all about?

Founded in 1894 in Los Angeles, this small charity was formed by a group of ‘society ladies' with the goal of reaching out to the sick and needy. Today there are 120 chapters with thousands of women investing over 2.6 million volunteer hours worth over $25 million to communities across the country. This chapter, founded in 1961, is one of the largest in the state and does some amazing things for local children. "To improve the quality of life for our children," former president Joan Barclay told me when talking about the goals of the Portland chapter. "Our Children's Dental Center [for example], has taken over 3500 appointments in 2007 alone." And it's not just teeth cleanings services because they also help kids with severe periodontal issues, root canals and even extensive dental restorations. Other great programs include: Operation School Bell® (helping underprivileged kids prepare for school with new clothes), Life Story Books for kids in foster care, Assault Survivor Kits® and cuddly teddy bears for children with cancer as they head to Camp Agape.

Their message is clear: Volunteers Serving Children. And while national charities serve people all over, it's important for me to know that donations and funds raised by the Assistance League of Portland go straight to the children here at home in our local communities. So, like good neighbors, please drop by their store, say hello and let them know how happy we are to have them here in town.

Welcome to the Assistance League

Dear friends of Assistance League of Portland,

As a national, non-profit philanthropic organization of volunteers, we are dedicated to the mission of serving the diverse needs of children and families in the Tri-County area. Our worthwhile programs are funded through grants, personal donations, memorials and annual major fundraiser gala, and surplus from sales at our thrift and consignment shops in Beaverton.

We thank you for your continued support.

A Little About Us

Assistance League was the first nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization founded in the West to recognize the potential of volunteers in helping those less fortunate to a better, more meaningful life. This chapter's core programs include:

  • Thrift Store
We sell women's, men's, children's clothing and shoes along with housewares, books, linens, jewelry and small furniture. Donations in good condition are accepted.
  • Consignment Store
We sell lovely items of furniture, art, accessory décor and jewelry. Consignments are by appointment and donated items are greatly appreciated.
  • Children's Dental Center
All children in the Portland School District, K-12, who qualify for the free lunch program also qualify for free dental care at the center. The facility is open during the school year and available appointments fill up quickly.
  • Operation School Bell
This program provides clothing for children in grades K-6 in the Hillsboro School District. Each child who comes through the program receives two pair of jeans, two tops, a jacket, five sets of underwear and socks, and a shoe voucher (when available).
  • Assault Survivor Kits
  • Discover OHSU

Assistance League supports these programs:

  • Life Story Books
  • Kids ‘n Cancer
  • Back Pack to School
  • Hope Spring
  • Pettygrove and Cordero
