The Beaverton Farmer's Market is a very neat place to visit for produce and food items but be sure to stop by the new artist aisle near the church because it's here that you'll find some of the greatest handcrafted gift ideas in town. There's a lot to choose from but let me tell you about one of my favorites: Jewelry by Bert.
Roberta Cohen lives in the Beaverton area with her husband Paul, and crafts all of her jewelry at home in her workshop. "I love doing crafts," she told me and as the conversation went on, she said that she'd had been doing a variety of crafts since she was 10 years old. "I've been creating things my whole life" and up until recently, it's just been for herself, her family and friends. But in 2006, she started to share her best work with the rest of us: custom fashion jewelry.
So there I was at her booth in the Farmers Market admiring the colorful jewelry pieces on display when Bert came up and explained, "a lot of my jewelry is centered around a focal bead [a larger and more decorative piece] made from a local artist," she told me as I looked around. "I then create around that piece to match a theme." And from what I saw, her themes varied from the intricate to the delicate to the fanciful and the fun. "The whimsical pieces attract the most people," she told me when I picked up a necklace with a funny looking duck bead at its center. Bert gave me a big grin and I could see in her eyes that these whimsical pieces nicely reflected her whimsical personality. Oh what fun to do what you enjoy most!
80-90% of her jewelry are made from beads and start at only $5, a great bargain for what you get. She has several different styles of necklaces, bracelets and earrings but you can also find some really great gift items like serving utensils and wine stoppers. All are handmade so if you don't see a style you like, you can simply put in your request to Bert and she'll be happy to help you out.
Bert's favorite Beaverton store is the frame shop in the Summercrest mall. "Robin is such a nice person and does great custom framing that you can't get anywhere else." And he also happens to be cheaper than the national chains too.

Using sterling silver clasps, wires, and chains, as well as one-of-a-kind beads, whimsical jewelry is Roberta's specialty. Choose from lampwork beads or beautiful SwarovskiTM crystals, as well as an assortment of gemstones including pearls, amethyst, and amber.
Beaded Earrings & Bracelets

I also make children's bracelets and necklaces. I use polyclay beads on stretch cord, in sizes appropriate for young girls. Many are in holiday themes.

Custom-Designed Eyeglass Neck Cords
Custom-designed eyeglass neck cords are available in a variety of styles to help you keep your eyeglasses in place. Prices vary depending upon materials used in construction and start at around $12.
Custom-Designed Badge Holders
I have designed a very pretty badge holder, with a magnetic catch at the back, that acts as a 'break-away', which is required by many companies for safety reasons. The necklace part can be ordered in many different colors and styles. I generally use seed beads, but other beads can be added as desired. The part that the badge clips onto, which can also be used to hold eyeglasses, is a sterling silver ring that has a word engraved on it. There are many different choices, such as mom, hope, faith, love, etc. The cost is typically $16.
Holiday Themes
Jewelry by Bert specializes in holiday jewelry. I love to find lampwork beads that depict a specific holday theme and create a unique piece of jewelry with it. I have many pieces for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Easter and Valentine's Day.

Wine Stoppers
Jewelry by Bert's unique designs include wine stoppers to replace your wine cork. Roberta will add an artistic look to a metal stopper utilizing glass beads to create a personal touch. These make a wonderful special gift to offer to friends or loved ones for any occasion. Stoppers are $12 and discounts are available for multiple purchases. I have a new line of stoppers using Swarovski crystals and other fancy beads. They sell for $25 or 2 for $40.
Cell Phone Charms & Zipper Pulls
Whimsical charms are available in a variety of styles to be used as cell phone charms or zipper pulls. They can also be hung on belt loops or handbags. These are fun pieces that can enhance your wardrobe. Many of the designs are animals, bugs or dolls. Prices vary depending upon materials used in construction and start at as little as $8. |
