So what kind of animal makes the best kind of pet?
A dog... a cat... a hamster... or perhaps it's tropical fish? Well, everyone likes what they like but if you ask long time Beaverton resident Beverly Morlan, owner of BiZee Bird, she'll tell you in a loud voice, "I just love birds!"
Located in our historic downtown district on the corner of Watson and 5th St, right across from the park, the BiZee Bird house is a wonderful place to visit on the way to the Beaverton Library or fountain. Kids will certainly love the place as they talk to Sophie, a Scarlet Macaw and ever-present mascot for the store. "Give me a kiss," Sophie squawked as she sat on Beverly's shoulder followed by, "Was that good?" and "yum, yum, yum!" Yes, Sophie certainly steals the show with her constant one-liners.
But of course there are other wonderful exotic birds there to see: from Parakeets, Finches and Canaries to Cockatiels, Quakers, Conures and African Greys (Beverly's favorite). And if you like budgies, Beverly is the only one around sells them hand fed. Don't see the bird of your dreams? Beverly mentioned that she's pretty good at finding just about anything with feathers. So as I was admiring the aviary, I could hear customers coming and going and each time, Beverly would warmly greet and see to their many needs:
- One person came in to buy one of the BiZee Bird hand crafted toys from the fully stocked display walls. "I worked hard at keeping prices down," Beverly said as she showed me a hand woven cotton rope swing, "I make these myself."
- Another person browsed through the 30+ bins of healthy bird feed that is a specialty for the store. With names like Parakeet Deluxe, Cockatiel Delight and Sleek & Sassy (Oregon made), Beverly mentioned, "these are very healthy foods customized for exotic birds... fresher and cheaper than what you can get from chain stores."
- And when a distraught woman came in worried about her bird with a bloody feather, Beverly quickly put her at ease with her medical, grooming and handling advice. With her many years of experience, Beverly confidently talks with all her customers about almost anything bird related. "She has a wealth of knowledge," one customer told me before she left.
- Then as I was preparing to leave, another woman came in with a large birdcage that I helped put on a shelf behind the counter. "We are going away for a few days," she told me, "I can't tell you how happy I am that Beverly will be taking care of my bird... and it's so reasonable." Boarding and grooming are just a couple of the valuable services that Beverly can provide.
Good advice from Beverly if you are thinking about owning an exotic bird:"You have to be prepared to deal with the mess, being pooped on and sometimes getting love bites."

Welcome to BiZee Bird When I was five years old, my parents got me my first tame parakeet (or budgie is the true name). It was so cute, I immediately fell in love. I remember playing games with the little guy... oh, how he loved to give kisses. That was the beginning of my love for birds. Then in my adult life I bought a couple of cockatiels who after a few years started to have babies and thus began my love for raising baby birds. Now after many years of raising all kinds of exotic birds, it's the African Grey that steals my heart. Having raised and bred probably hundreds of these African Greys over the years, you could say 'Greys' are my specialty but really, you could ask me about almost any exotic bird and I should know the answer most of the time.
