Nodd's Introduction I visited the Alpine House located just off Oleson Rd near Vermont St with Nena Terry of Adult Choices, senior placement services. We were greeted by Joana Olaru, owner of the home and soon realized that she had forgotten we were scheduled to visit that morning. But although she was unprepared, she graciously invited us in instead of rescheduling. As Joana fretted about the unkempt state of the house, I actually preferred to see the inside as it would look on any given day and I'm happy to report that despite some breakfast left in the kitchen and some beds that were not made up, the overall look and feel was clean. No unpleasant smells or unsightly stains. But with Joana's attention to detail, this does not surprise me. The layout of the house was simple, spacious and very nicely decorated. "I try to give them their lives as long as it does not infringe on their safety [while at the same time] help them adapt to their lower body level," she said as she showed us the bedroom and bathing areas which were customized for each resident's physical ability. We then toured the living areas of the house where I got a very nice sense of community. The residents were all gathered around a large flat screen TV but listening to choir music, a favorite of one of the residents. "We encourage exercise to one's tolerance," Joana told us. She promotes respect and harmony through firm rules and encourages all her residents to participate in various chores around the house including the preparation of meals. For recreation, there is a large fenced backyard with a basketball court, garden and fruit trees so residents can safely and privately spend time outside. "My promise to my residents is that this is your home and you do not have to move away. You will be treated as people who still have something to offer. We will encourage you to be an individual and continue to do the things that make you smile."
